January — The rate-cut question

Monetary policy • Inflation • Bonds
THE MACRO PICTURE

The Federal Reserve held its policy rate at 3.50–3.75% at its 27–28 January meeting. Investors were weighing whether inflation would cool fast enough to allow further easing without a deterioration in employment.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR MARKETS

When expected rate cuts move further into the future, short-dated bond yields can remain elevated and the present value of future corporate earnings comes under pressure. A resilient labour market can support spending, but also make disinflation harder.

GEOPOLITICAL RISK

The geopolitical watchlist included Ukraine, Middle East energy security and trade policy. Any disruption to oil or shipping can push inflation expectations higher, complicating central-bank decisions.
